Social Isolation

Social isolation is an interesting topic because it spans all segments of society and I think that technology is actually causing more social isolation rather than fighting it. I’d like to start a series of posts about social isolation.

I heard about an initiative that Boston College is doing to try and combat social isolation. But when you read the story which I’ve linked below, its about providing awareness and training to professionals about the issue. How are you actually going to reach out to those effected by social isolation through this kind of initiative or awareness process? It seems like they are only focusing on the elderly and that means they are probably going to go into retirement communities and try and reach people there. However, most people in retirement communities are there as a way of combating social isolation. Show me how you are going to reach shut-ins.

In future posts relating to this topic, I will cover other generations that are effected by social isolation, I guess particularly youth. But I would argue that even people in their 20’s and 30’s suffer from social isolation and use technology to either contribute to that isolation or try and assist them in combating social isolation.
